It looks like the symmetry of the triple figure hides a fourth image, covered and invisible."
This
question allows us to read together one of the «hidden» characteristics of our
Site. That is, to illustrate the esoterism of its symbolism. The first image
on Esonet that you mentioned is a mandala, chosen to represent the building
of the rainbow (or antahkarana) Bridge. This Bridge is called rainbow because
of the colours of the 7 energies expressed in it. It is also an allegory representing
the aspect of the conscience through which the personality – with self sacrifice
– accepts to be enlightened in its own physical identity.
The enlightenment of the physical personality is a gradual process which happens
in small stages and is affected by the superior «will» of the Ego. The Ego will
determine the transmutation through which it will eventually become an initiatory
identity.
The esoterical teaching (excuse my generic term) says that in the Path of the
right hand, White, is the initiation meant to free humankind. Opposite to the
White Path is the left hand’s path, the Black Path, which is the domain of ephemeral
passions and possession (sensual path). They represent the choice in life. Each
candidate gets to a point where he has to face a dilemma; he can choose (see
the article on: Freedom of choice and Free Will). He can keep obeying the impulses
of the lower nature, which wishes to possess, and get closer and closer to the
principles of the sensual way; or he can follow the «inner voice» of the conscience
of the Ego which «pushes» him to go back to himself through the inner way. On
his inner way he will meet the first occult Master (sup. Ego) which will lead
him to the true Master (the mind) and to the Light of the inner God (the Monad).
A previous essential step, though, is to tidy up (enlighten with his conscience
attention) the contents of his subconscious and «free their energy» from the
forms (images) of thoughts that are kept inside (in psychology: the phantasmatic
research).
It is impossible to try and get closer to one self’s consciousness without having
accomplished this act of liberation (symbolized in the descent to the «infernals»
of one’s self).
This explains the failure of the devotional culture (?); it says that to –ascend
to the sky- (which is only interior) it is necessary to «punish and mortify»
or even «destroy» the superficial personality together with all the sub-personalities
of one’s unconscious. The result would be images which are prisoners, victims
of barbaric intentions to hide them in a complete «censorship» (psychical darkness).
In truth, those thoughts (images) should be considered as victims of our abuses
rather than tempting demons. They are forms of thought that we have built ourselves
and used as toilet paper to clean our psychical excrements.
Bertrand Russel (father of the analytical philosophy) effectively defined
the collective subconscious as the septic tank of humankind. The subconscious
(personal and collective) is the hell that we have built (both as individuals
and as humankind) using our worst feelings; we have shaped them in the most
undesirable forms, for different reasons, and then we have hidden them in an
impossible oblivion dissociating ourselves from «them» to try and re-establish
an impossible virginity of the conscience. This trick doesn’t work, though.
Every image (passion or feeling) that we have sank in the hypocrisy of our censorships
keeps living and generating new images. Those images want to keep living, by
the rule of the salmon. They will always come back on the surface where they
were born. In order to go back to their source of life (the awaken conscience)
they will join other similar thoughts (association of ideas) and create those
emotional boosts (spurs-temptations) which lead us to act impulsively. We will
not acknowledge these actions as ours and we will attribute them to goodness
knows what demoniac entity. But we are actors and directors of all this, so
we need to take back under control this puppet show. We must give light and
freedom back to all these «actors» (not guilty themselves) and use their vital
energy for more profitable goals.
The meanings of the image that you asked me to comment are all connected with
those of the following images [1]; they are all part of a message, or, if you
like, symbolic teaching, used to represent the spiritual accomplishment of the
initiatory wisdom. The Great Means to conclude such an enormous initiatory Work
is only “to allow” the spiritual will, transmitted through the mind, to –lean
out- on the physical world. The origin of the spiritual power is the primordial
sound expressed by the Primal Cause: generator of the physical universe. That
is why some mystics said that the spiritual emanation on a material level is
the «incarnation of the Word» or the «Word that becomes Man». Among the lower
mysteries one way doesn’t have more privileges or merits than the other. In
fact, if we examine them separately, the inner way lacks of what’s in the exterior
way and the other way round.
The exclusively intimate way lacks of the result of the action to the outside
(the so-called way of will and common welfare). The exclusively exterior way
lacks of the intimate vision that allows to distinguish the egocentric principles
of one’s self from the impersonal tension of the superior Ego.
It appears, then, that both the eastern disciples and the western aspirants
make the same mistake, even if in two opposite directions.
In the view of the eastern disciple the main element is the intimate tone which
amplifies the use of the inner perceptions belonging to his feminine side. His
defect is the immobility in the action and therefore the spiritual inability
to exteriorize himself. On the opposite, the western apprentice pays too much
attention to the masculine side of his nature, so he amplifies his tendency
to the exterior activity.
His defect is the immaturity of his inner processes which will change the meaning
of his exterior action; therefore he will confuse what he really is with what
he’s expected to be. In his haste to «do» or to «become» the aspirant is so
hyperactive that he is not able to accomplish that inner development that is
the very instrument for a spiritually enlightened conduction. To reveal the
Great Means it is necessary to use, first of all, the instruments of the heart
(not to be confused with the soul) and of the physical mind.
We find some of them in the images on Esonet, which are complementary instruments
regarding the Work of initiatory learning. But let’s proceed methodically. In
the first image everything is inside a sphere which demarcates the being’s field
of action. The aura of Light that shrouds the three figures represents the spiritual
power which, coming from the soul, enlightens the double essence (male-female)
of the physical being and originates a third element that adds the spiritual
nature of the individual to the personality.
The old man represents this third and major element which originates from the
irradiation of the soul that reaches the two minor elements. Their sum represents
the exteriorization of the initiatory Wisdom irradiating from the soul. The
Initiate, then, is the exteriorization or even the incarnation of the spiritual
will “transmitted through” the soul. Spirit and soul are, in fact, two parts
of the same Unity, but a bigger one.
The two minor figures represent the two entities so widely discussed on this
Site: the masculine (the will of mind) [2] and the feminine (empathy and altruistic
love) [3] which in every Man and Woman are separated through the physical and
sexual imprinting. These instinctual elements must be turned into two components
of the same Unity. They must become single elements, sensible, therefore intelligent,
parts; they should be expressed in the same amount in the conscience of anyone,
Man or Woman, who aspires to progress and to the evolution of his/her own inferior
self. In the image the colour white represents the –big spiritual synthesis-;
the other colours are those characteristics of the spiritual Work. In particular,
the predominance of blue represents the relevant effect that love and wisdom
have on the Work of the physical level. The Great Cross in the background has
a horizontal and a vertical arm. These are the two directions which affect the
activity of living creatures. The lines in the horizontal arm represent the
directions determining life on a physical level; they intertwine and interact
with the vertical lines of the spiritual directions. The vertical and horizontal
irradiations in the Big Cross represent the two spaces and two times that determine
life which, at least apparently, is expressed as physical substance and metaphysical
essence. To say the truth, the reason why physical substance and metaphysical
essence are perceived as two separate entities is that the physical conscience
is unable to perceive both. When its perception is refined these two sides of
the same reality are perceived as a complex representation of the same life,
instead of two separate and distant identities.
The energetic irradiation in the centre of the image represents the activity
of the heart which is the centre of the intelligence of the soul. The adept
holds in his hand the obscure triangle which represents the logic that he uses
in every action on the level of «forms» and physical «intentions».
The logic that moves the adept’s spiritual action on the level of intentions
must be obscured; an enlightened conscience unable to obscure its identity might
hurt, with the clarity of its truths, the sight of those who are still in the
dark, making it impossible for them to see what they are given. Furthermore,
it would cancel the adept’s idea of placing himself at the service of those
who are still only the shadow of their own soul. If he’s able to obscure himself
and to eclipse the vigour deriving from the will of the soul, he will also obscure
