There is initiation and Initiation
By Athos A. Altomonte
‘All our disputes and intellectual speculations about divine mysteries are useless, because they come from external sources. God's mysteries are known only to god and in order to know them we must first of all look for god in our own center.'( Aurora – Jacob Boehme)
People are not usually interested in understanding what Initiation is, what does it mean to be an Initiate and what is necessary to do in order to become one. Perhaps because knowing these things would lead to awkward comparisons. Our friend A. D'Alonzo has already dealt with the distinction between regular initiation (see article) and all that is not regular.
The study, though, should continue on other fundamental concepts of initiation. We should distinguish between symbolic initiation and Initiation. This would be already enough to outline three psycho-initiatory profiles: the irregular initiate, the symbolic initiate and the real Initiate. Through these profiles we would have the clear difference between lesser initiate and greater Initiate; therefore between lesser mysteries and greater mysteries .
Once we have understood the differences, we can concentrate on our project, viz. where we want to go.
Here is an example. Children can't distinguish between one model of a car and another. Neither do they know the difference between a small and a big engine, between driving a car in the city and racing a car on a track. When they play they are all Schumacher, because imagination allows anything. When we become spectators of reality, though, the differences are obvious and everything is rescaled. Likewise when we meet a true Initiate; it is a rare event, but not impossible (if we want to).
Even though I am not an initiate, I have developed the ability to distinguish a symbolic initiate from a real Initiate, through the ‘symptoms' that characterize them and make the difference between the two.
My conclusion is to carry on the process of re-cognition and distinction between different kinds of initiation. This is the only way to be sure of the direction to take and not to get stuck in delusions.
